ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- A Monroe Avenue building has been demolished after a Thursday night fire.

Three families lived in the three-apartment building and luckily, everyone made it out safely.

However, one couple that lived in the building was celebrating their honeymoon in Miami when they learned of the news. Kera and Adam Nugent found out their home had been destroyed when an old friend called Adam.

"The worst part for me is that I lost my mother when I was young so everything I had left of her was in that house," Kera said.

The couple had two cats together, Duke and Layla. Duke was found by someone during the demolition, but Layla never made it out of the fire.

For the young couple, it's a tough situation already testing their vows.

"Going back to reality, that's one thing to get over," Adam said. "But going back to the reality of having nothing like, what is home now?"

The Nugents are hoping they can overcome it thanks to community support.

We have so many friends that have been collecting clothes and donations for when we get home," Kera said. "We have five more days here but knowing we're coming home to such a great support system is really helping us keep it together."

The Nugents have renter's insurance. When they return to Rochester, they will be staying at a friend's place until they find somewhere permanent. Friends and family have also set up two GoFundMe accounts to help the couple.

Fire investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire Thursday night, but at this time, they do not believe it is suspicious.
