This year Rochester firefighter Shane Mandel underwent the procedure, and as a result, will no longer need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and I can't thank Dr. Lindahl and his staff enough for the opportunity. It's great. It's awesome," exclaimed Mandel.

"Typically, we've tried to do it on 911 but we always haven't been able to do that, so today was a little late but I'm a big believer in our first responders and they're my personal heroes as well," stated Dr. Kennethy Lindahl, ophthalmologist at Rochester Eye and Laser Center.

The center receives nominations for first responders every year. The staff narrows the nominations down to three and then the public votes for the LASIK recipient online.
