ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A woman is recovering after firefighters say she jumped into the Genesee River.

Just before midnight Saturday, firefighters spotted a woman in the river under the Ford Street Bridge. Fire crews say when they arrived, the woman had already been swept 400 yards downstream.

Rescue swimmer Jason Wharity swam to her and got her out of the water.

"As I was swimming to her, she was starting to just, kind of, getting lower and lower in the water," Wharity said. "I would imagine, at that point, one to two minutes, we probably would have lost her out of the water. Again, at night, who knows with the outcome that would have been."

The woman suffered from hypothermia. She was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay.
