ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — What do the names Chaka Khan, Bell Biv DeVoe, Mary J. Blige and Tweet bring to mind?

These are just some of the big names to take the stage at the annual Rochester Summer Soul Music Fest.

At one point it appeared the festival might not survive, but it was re-branded. Last year COVID-19 canceled the fest, but the city's premiere soul fest is back with a big-name headliner.

It was launched by then-mayor Bill Johnson and Loretta Scott, who was the head of parks and recreation at the time. This year's 25th-anniversary fest pays tribute to both of them.

News10NBC's Lynette Adams sat down with Rochester Native Varick Baiyina and his son, Amir, to talk about the festival's legacy and what we can expect this year.
