A former Rochester school principal is back in town after weathering the powerful and destructive Hurricane Maria.
Edward Witaszek went to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a birthday celebration and ended up staying for weeks.
He just flew back Monday and shared his story of survival with us on Tuesday. He said, despite everything that happened, neighbors never stopped helping neighbors.
Witaszek says, "Anywhere you look, things have fallen and big trees. Neighbors started to come out and clean up, young people where launching brigades. People were -- I don't know -- waiting for the National Guard. It wasn't deployed. It's really shocking to me."
Witaszek said the most inspiring part of the recovery was the mayor of San Juan who he saw sleeping at shelters and helping people on the streets.
