ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Rochester mother claims that Shannon Johnson, the owner of Kiddie City Daycare in Henrietta, intentionally hurt her one-year-old.

Kiddie City is a home-based child care service on Thompson Road in Henrietta. Johnson is accused of spanking the baby girl with a belt before throwing her into a playpen on Aug. 29. Court papers claim the baby's six-year-old sister witnessed the assault, and said she had been hit herself.

Shannon Johnson pleaded not guilty to two counts of second degree assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child in Henrietta Town Court on Wednesday. The alleged victim's mother wanted to hide her identity, but shared photos of the baby's alleged injuries.
"These are the people we're supposed to trust, they're licensed to provide and keep your children safe," the mother said. "I want her to tell me why she had to use that type of corporal punishment on my daughter."

New York State records show Kiddie City's license was suspended on Sept. 10. There have been more than a dozen state child care service violations at the facility this year. Johnson's attorney, Yousef Taha, spoke for his client at court Wednesday.

"She remains not guilty of all charges, we look forward to going into court, [and] handling these charges on her behalf," Taha said. "She's had no arrests in her life, and she's been a law-abiding citizen her whole life."

Court papers say Johnson claimed the baby was injured when she fell on the gravel in the driveway.

"Now I have trust issues, I don't want anybody watching my kids," the mother said. "It's just like, I never thought this would happen, and now what's my next step?"

Deputies believe there could be more victims in this case. They're asking anyone who might be impacted to call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 911. In addition, New York State has an online system available where you can see how many violations a daycare center has had and check to see if a provider is licensed.
