News10NBC celebrates Black History Month by honoring people and places that have paved the way for many in the Rochester area.
Charles Price joined the Rochester Police Department in 1947.
When he took the oath he became the first black man to serve the department.
He worked his way up the ranks from detective to captain.
During his career he worked security for both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X on their Rochester visits.
Captain Price retired from RPD in 1985
He just turned 96 last month but remains active with the Kiwanis Club and still volunteers at local schools.
News10NBC honors Charles Price as a part of Rochester's Roots.
