ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - Hester Jeffery fought for women’s rights alongside Susan B. Anthony.
As an educated African American woman, she was a strong advocate for equal rights for all.
Because she was a black woman, she was not allowed to join any civic clubs promoting women’s rights. So in 1896, Jeffery started her own, she helped found the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (NACWC).
Jeffery also gave a eulogy at Susan B. Anthony’s funeral and helped raise funds for a Frederick Douglass statue in Rochester.
