ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - Police are investigating after a suspicious package was found Tuesday morning at the Federal Building on State Street.

Rochester Police responded and closed off several streets in the area as the building was evacuated and workers in nearby businesses were urged to stay inside. Bomb technicians sent in their robot to remove the package just before 10 a.m.

Police say it may have been some kind of deliberate hoax and the package was intentionally made to look suspicious. If this was some kind of deliberate stunt, police say someone could be facing a long list of serious charges including federal charges.

"It's not a prank," Deputy Police Chief Scott Peters said. "I just think back to Oklahoma City when all those people perished. This is not a laughing matter. It's not a joke. It's nothing that we take lightly. No matter what."

The package itself is now being investigated.

The area is now clear and the Federal Building is back to normal operations.
