HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Rush-Henrietta athlete accused of threatening to launch a school shooting on social media was arrested Wednesday.
Deputies charged 19-year-old Shamire Broyld with making a terroristic threat, a D-Class felony in his arraignment in Henrietta Town Court.
On Tuesday, the sheriff's office received a 911 call reporting a "concerning social media post" by Broyld.
"Pretty much thinking about shooting up a school," explained Capt. Paul DeLella. "It's very alarming. You can't take anything lightly."
The news rattled some families at Rush-Henrietta High School and the Webster Learning Center, both of which Broyld had attended.
"It kind of shakes you, makes you wonder," exclaimed Betty Gascoyne, a student's grandparent. "All the shootings and all these places like Columbine, all these places where this is taking place. It's not good."
Rush-Henrietta dad Phil Miess took the news in stride.
"Stuff like that happens all the time. Someone called in a bomb threat a couple years ago. And I think it was one last year too," Miess added.
Deputies went to Broyld's home Tuesday night and met with him and his mother. They said they established he did not have a gun or any access to one, and that he confessed to writing the message.
"I believe he made something to the effect of he didn't mean it," DeLella recalled. "Which… completely understandable, but in this day and age, when almost once a month you're reading about school shootings or shooting in the workplace, they're not going to be taken lightly."
Classes were not interrupted at any Rush-Henrietta schools although deputies increased their presence at Webster and Rush-Henrietta.
Deputies took Broyld to Strong Hospital Tuesday night for evaluation before arresting him Wednesday.
"He was quiet," DeLella said. "I think he realized what he did was wrong and I think he has some personal issues that he has to work through."
Broyld was remanded to the Monroe County Jail and held on $2,500 cash bail or $25,000 bond.
