Answers for Sam’s Club customers after Rochester-area store closings

If you shopped at Sam's Club, your check may be in the mail.  Many who shop there frequently have Sam's Club credit cards.  Those credit cards come with cash back.  But Sam's Club stores in the Rochester area closed last month.

One viewer, Jim Hampton, learned he can’t cash his check.   He’s frustrated.

According to the company's store locator, now the nearest Sam's Club is in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga, more than an hour away from his home.  Hampton has decided to cancel his membership. but he also has a Sam’s Club credit card.

"They issued their own card that had cash back," said Hampton.

The company's website boasts cash back is the big benefit of this card. Cardholders receive 5% when they buy gas, 3% back on dining and travel, and 1% on everything else.

But there's a catch.  Your cash back arrives as a check that’s made out to Sam’s Club.  The check can only be used at a Sam’s Club location.  On the card's website, it states cardholders cannot redeem the check at, or Walmart locations.
Hampton believes that’s not fair. After all, he entered a contractual agreement with the credit card company with the expectation he would get cash back.  But now he can't redeem the check.  Hampton believes there's a fair solution.

“I believe Walmart owns Sam's,” he said. “Why not have us be able to redeem them at Walmart?"

So News10 NBC consumer investigator Deanna Dewberry sent several emails to the company representatives.  A Sam’s Club representative confirms that Rochester-area cardholders can call the number on the back of your card and either get the amount of the check credited to your account, or you can request a check you can cash at the bank.
