He's toward the top of his class- and was at the top of the podium at sectionals- Churchville-Chili's Payton Gleason is the Scholar Athlete of the Week.
"It was a very special race," he says of the Section V championship, "I was coming down the finishing straight, I knew I had it and some feeling rushed p my chest and I realized what I did- and that I finally won."
Winning a sectional title is always a tremendous accomplishment for a high school athlete, and that was certainly the case for Gleason, when he won the indoor mile race at sectionals.
Payton is a distance runner. The long distance events. He's even earned a scholarship to run at the University of Memphis next season- but what does he think about to pass the time while running?
"Starting sophomore year, I was doing math in my head," he says.
However, he's not talking about long division or simple addition problems. No, it's something more difficult!
"Usually, it's something tough," he says, "A unit we did in math, starting sophomore, that would have been trig, worked to calculus."
Payton says that he doesn't always do math while he runs. Sometimes, equations evolve into memorizing songs, like one spoofed by friends of his who run for bright- "Can't Break My Stride".
Math and songs must be working for Payton, though. He finished fifth in the two-mile at States, and also competed at nationals!
So, congratulations to Payton Gleason, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week presented by Nixon Peabody and the Ide Family of Dealerships.
