ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York State could lose billions of dollars in federal money set aside for rent relief if it doesn’t release more of that money.

United States Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer issued the warning Sunday.

Schumer claims until last week New York was the only state that has not sent out any rent relief money to tenants and landlords .$2.3 billion in federal relief was sent to the state, but only $130,000 dollars in payouts have been made so far.

Schumer says that money could be lost if it doesn’t get sent out by September.

The state launched an online application portal on June 1 and said it would take four to six weeks to process applications. Tuesday marks eight weeks.
