ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- After things wrapped up at Oak Hill the party moved down the street to the Country Club of Rochester where one of the golfers in the Senior PGA was honored Thursday night.
Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke was awarded the first-ever Walter Hagen Ambassador of the Game award.
The award recognizes those who contribute to the growth of the sport. The award's namesake, Walter Hagen, was the Country Club of Rochester's first head professional as well as golf's first ambassador.
Hagen brought golf to the youth of the world and Clarke is mirroring Hagen's efforts through his foundation.
"To receive this Walter Hagen award is huge and huge for my foundation and the people back home behind the scenes. Everything works great but it's the people behind the scenes that need all the credit for it, but it's wonderful for the members of CCR to give me the first one. It's very special," said Clarke.
Clarke had a very good day at Oak Hill.
He shot a 68, so hopefully, that kind of performance can continue for him. Round two begins Friday.
