Several fire companies responded to a fire at Shadow Lake Country Club in Penfield Monday afternoon.
The Penfield fire chief says the initial call from the alarm company stated that the fire started in the kitchen.
The general manager thought the fire was out and turned on the ventilation hood to clear some smoke. The chief said the general manager didn't know that the fire had spread into the ventilation system and onto the roof.
"When I first got here there was a lot of black smoke coming out of the ventilation system. I saw the manager on the phone in front and I yelled out to him, 'if you can get to the ventilation fan, shut it off.' But at that time there was so much smoke inside we couldn't reenter the structure," said Chief Earl Lubanski Jr.
That's when the chief called a second alarm to get the fire under control. They needed more trucks to get the water supply, which was about a quarter mile away, back to the golf club.
Five Mile Line Road was closed in both directions between Atlantic Avenue and Whalen Road but has since reopened to traffic.
There is a wedding scheduled at Shadow Lake this coming Saturday but the owner is not sure what they will do yet.
The fire chief says there was one person on the property when the fire started and no one was injured.
