Arrest made in BB gun assault at soup kitchen

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Rochester police arrested a man who they say shot two people with a BB gun inside the soup kitchen of a church Wednesday afternoon.

37-year-old Antonio Vargas of Rochester was arrested and charged with two counts of assault. He will be arraigned Thursday morning.

Officers responded to Christ Church at Lawn Street and Broadway around 12:30 p.m. 

Rochester Police Captain David Smith said that a man eating at the soup kitchen got into an argument with a man who worked at the soup kitchen. Captain Smith said that when a woman tried to intervene, the man who was eating at the soup kitchen took out a BB gun, and wounded the woman and the soup kitchen staff member.

News10NBC crews witnessed two people being taken away by ambulance. A man appeared to suffer an injury to his face, while a woman appeared to suffer a hand injury. Captain Smith described both injuries as minor.
