BRIGHTON, N.Y. (WHEC) — A sign posted at the proposed location for a new Whole Foods in Brighton is taking a shot at Wegmans over a legal dispute between the two stores.
The sign was added to an existing sign announcing the plans to put a Whole Foods on that location. The added sign reads: "Pending Wegman's new lawsuits" and has been posted for everyone to see at the Monroe Avenue location.
On Friday a state appellate court reversed the dismissal of a legal challenge, sending the case back to a lower court. Opponents of the project say that decision could cancel the project altogether.
Community advocates have opposed the plans for a Whole Foods at the site of the old Mario's Restaurant because they say it will increase traffic. Developers say the opposition is driven by Wegmans trying to keep competition out.
Wegmans issued this statement to News10NBC in response to the accusation:
"Our position on the impact of this project has not changed and has been made clear to the Town of Brighton and the DOT, and it's one shared by hundreds of residents and businesses. We are sticking with our decision to no longer respond to the developer's allegations, nor will we comment further on this project."
