After slow summer, Sodus Point small businesses seek strong holiday sales

SODUS POINT, NY (WHEC) – As the temperature drops, the holiday shopping season is heating up. And this season, shopkeepers hope you shop small.

It was undoubtedly a hard summer season for small businesses in Sodus Point. After rising lake levels flooded the area, tourism trickled in slower than ever.

“It was really rough. People weren’t coming out to open their cottages, they weren’t putting their boats in, they couldn’t go to the beach,” expressed Cathy Lukacs. She added, “The tourism was basically people coming down to see the flooding.”

Cathy and her husband own Lukacs Pottery Studios. They, like many others, depend on that summer tourism to survive. This year, they’re hoping to cash in on holiday shopping.

Years ago, Lukacs Pottery Studios teamed up with a handful of other businesses to create the Winter Wonderland Shopping Fling.

“We joined together to pay advertising costs and share customers. If someone comes in one shop, we encourage them to go into another,” she explained.

Shops participating in the Fling provide refreshments and free gifts to each shopper. Customers also get a stamp for each place they visit, which goes towards a drawing for a gift basket.

“It’s a good way to get people in the shops who haven’t been in before,” said Lukacs.

Around the corner, the owner of Pop’s House of Country Collectibles, Ruth Carter, runs the Facebook page for the event.

“We’re trying to bring awareness to the shops in our area. We’ve got small shops, some you’ve never been to before,” explained Carter.

Makayla LaRock, with Ye Olde Schoolhouse Country Store echoes that sentiment. “It brings everyone together, it shows you’re supporting each other,” she said. Adding, “Sodus Point got hit hard by the water. It was slow here, but hopefully with Christmas coming it will bring people over. That is what we’re all hoping for.”

The stores were already bustling on Friday, with the Shopping Fling lasting all weekend throughout Wayne County.
