ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Check your smoke alarms!

Universal Security Instruments is recalling about 180,000 smoke alarms because they may not sound when there's smoke.

The smoke alarms are 10-year battery-operated, ionization smoke and fire alarms, white in color and 5 ½ inches in diameter.

The recalled products have model numbers on the back of MI3050S and MI3050SB and date codes between 2015JAN19 through 2016JUL11.

They were sold between July 2015 to December 2016.

So far, there have been 134 reports of the alarms not activating during installation.

Customers are told to push the "test" button to make sure the alarm works. If it does, you're okay. If not, you should contact Universal Security for a replacement.

You can call Universal Security at 877-612-6955 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit and click on “Product Safety Notice."
