'Clipper system' bringing snow followed by cold temps

December 11, 2017 11:39 PM

A Winter Storm Warning has been posted for Monroe and Wayne Counties including the city of Rochester. Elsewhere a Lake Snow Warning has been posted for Wyoming County and Winter Weather Advisories will go into effect for the rest of the area Monday overnight and remains into the day on Wednesday.

Snow showers developed Monday evening, ahead of a developing “clipper system” that will dive towards Western New York out of the Western Great Lakes. Snow will be widespread overnight and looks to become heavy late with several inches expected by morning in many locations with temps rising into the lower 30s. We’ll see a break in the activity midday before lake effect snow squalls begin to form with the passage of the clipper.

Behind this area of low pressure, winds will pick up out of the north and northwest driving in MUCH COLDER conditions as lake snow picks up intensity by late Tuesday and into Tuesday night. By Wednesday morning, we could be looking at near whiteout conditions with heavy lake effect snow continuing and lots of blowing/drifting of snow as temperatures plummet into the upper single digits/lower teens with wind chill reads dropping BELOW ZERO!

Temps on Wednesday are not expected to escape the teens as a blustery northwest wind contuse bringing additional lake snow showers to the area. We’ll see the chance for lake snow showers continuing Wednesday night and into Thursday with more bitterly cold conditions.
