ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A doctor who has advised the Federal Government on coronavirus and other outbreaks spoke Saturday at Allendale Columbia School.

Retired U.S. Army Colonel Mark Kortepeter is a leading biodefense expert who is now a professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He was one of 11 speakers at the 8th annual TEDx event at Allendale Columbia.

He said he hoped that his words would inspire more young people to get into the field of diseases and public health, so they can then hopefully save lives.

As for the coronavirus outbreak that has emerged out of China?

"At this point, nobody can predict where this is gonna go," he says. "At this time, we may find out there's more patients out there and we can get more diagnostics and we'll be able to shut this down. But obviously, this is going to be going on for awhile and everyone is concerned and is trying to do the best public health that we can to try and limit the spread."

This year's TEDx at Allendale Columbia had the theme "Do We Have Your Attention?"
