New York State Police are using the technology for search and rescue missions, and to document accident and crime scenes.

One of only four trooper drone pilots in the state gave the media a demonstration on Thursday.

Governor Cuomo announced the launch of the program earlier this month.

Trooper Corey Harmon said that using drone technology in this way has been a long time coming.

"I think we've really been missing from not having it available to us, especially for search and rescue missions, or storm damage surveys," Trooper Harmon said. "It would have been great with the Lake Ontario flooding last year to have eyes in the sky, so everybody in the state and even Albany would know what it looked like."

The first four drones were put into service this month here in Western New York.

Drones are expected to be used throughout the entire state by April.
