ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, joined other speakers in Rochester Tuesday during the Arc Of Justice's news conference, which was calling for a federal monitor for the Rochester Police Department, among other moves.
Carr said it's time for leaders in power to stand up for their community.
Her son died in New York City when a police officer put him in a chokehold during an arrest back in 2014. There's now a statewide police chokehold ban named after him.
"You need someone with courage, you need someone who will stand up when they see wrong, and they right that wrong," Carr said. "If they are afraid to step out of the box, they need to step out of office."
RPD says they are actively engaging in reform, presenting changes in-person. The department feels they're on the right track. Organizers say they hope to meet with legislative leaders to support their demands.
