ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- Students who are not only considered role models, but have high GPAs and a stellar attendance record were recognized Thursday.

The Rochester Board of Education awarded students who have been named "Student Scholars" by the Rochester City Athletic Conference.

RCAC selects one male and one female athlete every month who truly exemplify what it takes to be a student-athlete.

All those awarded must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, have a 93 percent attendance rate and act as a true role model for others in their school.

"I grew up in a house where education was first so I always had to make sure my grades were right in order to play any other sport... that was one key to it. Also, just the determination I had to be able to get a scholarship and keep my grades up was there," said Djeynaba Thiam, scholar-athlete.
