A new study of race in local news finds that perception doesn't match reality.
The study, commissioned by Causewave Community Partners, looked at the actual content of local news in the Rochester region over a five week period, and compared that to what 550 people in the community think about race in local news.
Causewave found that local news stories involving people of color impact how people view race, but fewer than half believe that local coverage accurately mirrors what goes on in communities of color.
However, the other part of the study doesn't back up that perception, finding that local news covered people of color almost identically to how they cover white people. The study found that only 6% of stories were viewed negatively, 52% were neutral, and 34% were considered positive.
