Suicide fears amid lower milk prices in New York State

The drop in milk prices at your local grocery store has had a devastating effect on local dairy farmers.

Milk is the number one agricultural product in New York State. However, local dairy farmers are in the middle of a four-year trend of falling prices.

The dropping prices have left many farmers with nowhere to turn. It's led one dairy co-op to send out suicide prevention information to its members.

"When that letter first came out, I think it surprised a lot of people," said Steve Ammerman of the New York Farm Bureau.  "Some of them were really upset about it because it came with their milk check.  So not only did they see the less dollars than they were making, but then they're being told that things really are this bad."
