Syracuse University requiring booster shots for spring semester, a look at other colleges’ plans

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WHEC) — The booster will be a requirement for any eligible students, faculty, and staff who go to any Syracuse University campus location and study abroad locations.

Students living on campus must also take a COVID-19 test by Jan, 17. There are other dates for resident advisors, orientation leaders, and off-campus students.

Eligible people have either received the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna shot at least six months ago or the Johnson & Johnson shot at least two months ago.

Students will be required to upload documentation of the vaccine. Faculty and staff have verification requirements.

In April of 2020, the university was one of the first in the U.S. to make COVID-19 vaccinations a requirement.

In addition to the COVID-19 vaccine, students will also need to get the flu vaccine before the start of the spring semester.

Locally, the Rochester Institute of Technology said Tuesday it is still consulting with state and local health officials and has not made a decision yet.

Nazareth College, the University of Rochester and St. John Fisher College are strongly encouraging booster doses but say they don’t currently have plans to implement a mandate.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges say they intend to hold an on-campus booster shot clinic when students come back in January.
