ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Tops Markets started using plastic bags again at the height of the pandemic to help with sanitation concerns surrounding reusable bags.

The ban on plastic bags in New York State will not be enforced for the foreseeable future, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

The ban took effect on March 1, but enforcement has been repeatedly delayed due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic as well as a lawsuit in Albany.

Officials with the DEC have agreed to hold off until at least July 15. Moving forward, they will give at least 30 days notice before they begin enforcing the ban.
