Deputies discovered the truck involved in the freak accident that killed a 74-year-old woman earlier this month in Ontario County.

The accident, which claimed the life of Waterloo resident Barbara Amidon, was caused by a rock kicked up by a 2009 Freightliner.

The truck was owned by Manuel Vallejo and his brother of Vallejo Trucking.

They had just left Casella Landfill in Stanley after emptying a trailer full of residential waste. The truck was the last to leave the landfill around noon on Aug. 4.

Footage revealed a large rock was wedged between the rear dual wheels on the driver's side of the trailer as the truck-trailer combination left the landfill. The footage then shows the truck heading east on Rt. 5 while the mudflaps were up, which is a violation of NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Deputies say 65-year-old Gregory Sterman, of Geneva, was driving west on Rt. 5 when the rock smashed through the windshield and struck Amidon who was in the passenger seat.

Sterman drove Amidon to Geneva General Hospital where she was transported by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment. Amidon succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital Saturday night.

Vallejo was issued a uniform traffic ticket for the violation and will answer the ticket in court at a later date in the Town of Seneca.
