A three-year-old boy is on life support after police say he was beaten by his mother and step-father in Seneca Falls.

Donald and Alison Bovio are now behind bars, charged with felony first-degree assault.

Investigators say the parents claimed their son fell down the stairs at their apartment Saturday night, but medical staff at the hospital said the injuries didn't line up with their story.

According to court documents, the parents hit the boy with a belt multiple times, intentionally causing his head to hit the floor.

The injuries so bad, they had authorities on the brink of tears.

"EMS that responded... some of them were still pretty upset with what they found and how they had to deal with the child," David Ettman, assistant county attorney for Seneca County and Department of Human Services, says. "Our caseworkers are the same way. It's pretty rough on everybody."

Police say the boy was unconscious with a brain hemorrhage and unable to breathe.

"There was substantial trauma to the head and body of the child," Seneca Falls Police Chief Stuart Peenstra says.

The family had only been living in Seneca Falls for two months after moving from Salem, Massachusetts. Donald Bovio has an extensive criminal history, according to investigators.

The case now heads to a grand jury and authorities are confident more charges may be filed.
