DURHAM, N.C. (WHEC) — Two names familiar to Rochester Red Wings fans have been named to USA Baseball's team for the Premier12 tournament, which will be the first opportunity for qualification to the 2020 Olympics.
It was announced on Thursday that 2019 Red Wings outfielder Brent Rooker and former Red Wings pitcher Caleb Thielbar have been selected for the team, which will practice in Arizona later this month before beginning the tournament in Mexico in November. Should the Americans finish tops among competitors from the Americas territory, they will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Additional Olympic berths will be decided next March.
Former Yankees skipper Joe Girardi is scheduled to manage the team.
Other former Red Wings expected to take part in the tournament include Canada's Justin Morneau and Rene Tosoni, Korea's ByungHo Park, the Dominican Republic's Ervin Santana, and Chinese Taipei's Chih-Wei Hu.
