Union denies mayor's claim fire stations are already going dark during the day

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Following Monday night's public meeting over dynamic staffing for the Rochester Fire Department, the Mayor Lovely Warren says stations are already going dark during the day.

Some neighbors are calling on the city to end its dynamic staffing plan, which allows the city to close a fire station for certain shifts. Any calls received during that time will be covered by the next closest engine. City officials claim the move will save taxpayers more than a million dollars.

Mayor Lovely Warren said Tuesday she believes this is just fear-mongering.

"In the daytime, we take up to four companies out of service so it's not putting anyone's life at risk," Warren said. "I think you have a union trying to make this an issue, trying to get citizens riled up and it's wrong."

Regarding Warren's claim that the fire department does dynamic staffing during the day, the Rochester Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 1071 issued a response, saying the claim is false.

"It is true, however, that companies will train during the day to better protect the citizens of Rochester. While training, they may not be immediately available to answer calls. However, training can be canceled before it starts or even mid-session."
