HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WHEC) — The University of Rochester Medical Center is coming to Marketplace Mall as part of an ambitious plan worth a quarter of a billion dollars.
The new UR Medicine Orthopaedics and Physical Performance Center will be a 330,000 square foot facility on what was the Sears side of the mall. It will offer ambulatory surgeries and other orthopaedic services all in one spot, the only of its kind in the northeast.
The Monday announcement comes as mall owner Wilmorite says that retail continues to change and the mall sees a decline in traffic since the closure of two of its anchor stores. At the same time, UR Medicine says it has seen a 60-percent increase in orthopaedic ambulatory visits.
"So [for] over a year the leadership has searched for a space to meet a number of criteria: enough space, easy access, and a location that we could be in relatively quickly because the demand is now," says Tom Richard, the UR Medicine Chairman of the Board.
It's estimated as many as a quarter of a million people could come to the center each year after it opens in 2022.
