ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The University of Rochester Medical Center was awarded a federal grant to help fight the opioid crisis in rural communities.

The URMC’s Department of Psychiatry was named one of the three Rural Centers of Excellence on Substance Use Disorder in the country and will be awarded $6.7 million over three years to help identify and adapt evidence-based practices that help address the opioid crisis in rural Appalachian communities.

The UR Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence will focus on the Southern Tier of New York state, the southern tip of Ohio, the Southern Coalfields region of West Virginia and the Mountain and Kentucky River regions of Kentucky.
