Hate crime at Greece church under investigation by police

April 15, 2019 05:59 AM

GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) - The Greece Police Department is looking for the person or people who vandalized the Church of Christ on North Greece Road.

Minister William Jones found red spray-paint graffiti on several church doors just after 8 a.m. Sunday as he arrived for worship services.

Police are now investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Last month Jones says someone vandalized the church field. He says these incidents remind him of the recent fires at three predominately black churches in Louisiana. He worries what happened at his church is an indication of a larger problem in our country.

"With the burnings of buildings in Louisiana, with the tragedy in Pittsburgh at the synagogue this is not something we should take lightly," Minister Jones said. "We don't know what this is. We will redouble our efforts to make sure that we're secure here and we're going to keep on doing what God has called us to do. This certainly won't discourage us from doing the kings business."

Greece Police say they believe this incident is isolated and have not received any additional reports of this kind of vandalism.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Greece Police Department by emailing or calling (585) 581-4016.
