Volunteer firefighter numbers on the decline

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York reports that while the number of emergency calls is on the rise the number of volunteers continues to drop.

75-80 percent of communities in New York depend solely on volunteer firefighters – outside of major cities, those volunteers are the primary line of defense for your neighborhood.

"In today's society, they have to work two jobs or they're bringing kids to school or activities, they just don't have the time to devote to training and responding to calls," explained John D'Alessando from the Firemen's Association of the State of New York.

The Firemen's Association is planning to re-launch a tuition reimbursement program for community college students that volunteer.

In April firehouses statewide will hold open houses during an event called Recruit NY.
