After finishing what was likely her last Olympics, at a place where her beloved grandfather served during the Korean War, Lindsey Vonn said that she has scattered his ashes at the top of a mountain near PyeongChang.
A small group of South Korean men wanted to honor Vonn and her grandfather, Don Kildow, on Thursday. She received a letter of thanks for his service and small gifts.
"When it was announced that the games would be here, my grandfather was so excited,” Vonn said. “He's never really talked much about the war. But when he knew that I would be racing here, he told me a lot of stories and I think it had a really big impact on his life. And I know he would be very proud to get this plaque."
Vonn dedicated her performance in the 2018 Olympics to her grandfather.
