ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren is asking neighbors to call on state lawmakers to support a takeover of the Rochester City School District.
In the video released on the City of Rochester - Mayor's Office Facebook page, Warren and people who appear to be students and parents in the Rochester community call on their state lawmakers for change.
Warren says that she believes that the State Education Commissioner and Board of Regents are the experts, and she trusts their expertise.
Last week, News10NBC reported that emails from a state Regents trustee outline a proposal to oust the school board. The state would then appoint a new board and a superintendent.
In the video, Warren urges people to contact their state senators and assemblymembers.
"All of Rochester's families and children need you to step up," Mayor says in the video. "It's time to make your voice heard. Together its time to ensure that every child gets a quality education. It's time to seize this last best chance to make our city schools beacons of hope."
School board President Van White says the board is following the state's recommendations for improvement.
Warren supports a state takeover of schools but that would require legislative approval.
Warren: As you mayor and as a mother, I understand the plight of our parents who want to ensure that their children get a chance to live to their fullest potential. The State Education Commissioner and the Regents are the experts here. And I believe they are doing their best to help. But they need us.
Girl: Now we need you to reach out.
Parent: Please contact our state legislators, your assembly person and senator, and ask them to support the Commissioner's plan to fix Rochester City schools.
Boy: Provide all of us with the education we deserve.
Parent: Anything less, places politics and the needs of adults over the need of our children.
Boys: Now when it comes to our schools, the choice couldn't be clearer.
Girl: We have a choice between doing the same old thing or having a brighter future.
Parent 2: A choice between families suffering or community schools that lift them up.
Teens: A choice between losing another generation or allowing us to fulfill our dreams.
Warren: All of Rochester's families and children need you to step up. It's time to make your voice heard. Together we can ensure every child gets a quality education. It's time to seize this last, best chance to make our city schools beacons of hope.
