Winter keeps rolling along through end of month

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A cold will be passing across Western New York for Sunday. This means we can expect a shifting wind direction and, as a result, lake effect snow showers will be coming in off two of the great lakes during the next 24 hours.

In advance of the front, winds will be predominantly from the southwest tonight. Lake Erie snow will be developing from Buffalo and stretching east to portions of Genesee and Wyoming Counties. The News10NBC First Alert meteorologists expect the snow will be rather light with the most persistent snow bands producing one to two inches by morning – mainly southwest of Rochester. As the cold front passes, the wind direction will shift to the west to the northwest then producing snow showers off Lake Ontario. This will likely have a greater impact on the Rochester area for Sunday morning. Look for an occasional burst of snow with some poor visibility in spots. However, the duration of the snow will be very limited so any accumulation should be small. Most spots will only see an inch or two before the snow tapers to flurries by the afternoon. Expect another bitter cold 24 hours with lows in the middle teens tonight and highs only in the low twenties for Sunday.

We do not see any big storms affecting the great lakes this week, but the winter cold and occasional snow showers will be nearly unrelenting. A small “clipper” system will bring more snow showers Monday night and Tuesday. This will produce more area-wide light snow showers and additional localized lake snow. However, once again, any accumulation will be limited to just an inch or two. The temperature will remain in the 20s for Monday and early Tuesday, but another surge of very cold air is expected later Tuesday evening and Wednesday. We see the mercury eventually falling through the teens and into the single digits Tuesday night. Wednesday’s high temperature may not get much above twelve degrees with the temperature falling into the sub-zero range by Thursday morning.

Sunshine will be our only salvation this week. As high pressure builds in by Thursday it will turn brighter. As a result, Thursday is the one day that should bring plenty of sunshine, but the temperature will remain well below normal with readings mostly in the teens. It appears the mid-winter chill and flurries will last right through the upcoming weekend with little chance for warmer weather through the end of January.
