ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A state Assemblyman from Western New York has created a petition to split the state of New York into three regions.

Assemblyman David DiPietro, a Republican from East Aurora, claims a lot of the taxes from upstate New York are being invested in New York City.

He has created a petition at to garner support for his idea to divide New York into three self-governing regions while still keeping it one state. The regions would be:

- New York - Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond counties

- Montauk - Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, and Westchester counties

- New Amsterdam - every county north of Westchester county
