Women dying from childbirth complications at alarming rate

An alarming number of women are dying after giving birth.

The U.S. has one of the highest maternal mortality rates of any developed country.

According to the CDC, out of 100,000 births, between 20 and 25 women die every year.

Statistics show African American women die at higher rates. Some experts say economic and racial disparities could be to blame.

The data is scary, but local doctors say pre-conception care can help.

"I think it's sort of important to be aware that pregnancy is not totally safe," Dr. J. Christopher Glantz, an OBGYN with UR Medicine said. "If a woman has certain medical problems or issues, the better thing to do is go a doctor before she gets pregnant."

New York state is in the process of approving legislation that would create a maternal mortality review board.
It would be made up of doctors and researchers and investigate each death.

That bill has been approved by the Senate and is still stuck in Assembly.
