ROCHESTER N.Y. (WHEC) — Our News10NBC Threat Tracker has a Yellow Alert for strong to severe storm for Monday.

We'll have one more very summer-like day today with high temperatures approaching 80 along with a fair amount of mugginess to the air. We'll see the chance for a shower or thundershower, but this threat is mainly east of Rochester into the Finger Lakes this afternoon.

So, our Sunday forecast has improved, with mainly dry weather for the bulk of the area. That is great news if you have plans outdoors today. A Yellow Alert is now in effect for Monday, with storm chances going up significantly as an area of low pressure and cold front move through the region. We should see some sun and dry weather to start the day, but a line of showers and storms will likely begin to blossom from late morning toward midday.

As these storms move through Rochester and into the Finger Lakes, there's a chance they will begin to strengthen as they feed off of more daytime heating and instability. The main severe weather threat is the potential for isolated straight line wind damage, some rotating thunderstorms are possible, which means there's a low end chance for a brief tornado. Again, the main threat for this would be east of Rochester, toward Syracuse and into Pennsylvania. In addition to the gusty winds, small hail, lightning and heavy rain could accompany any storm. The First Alert Weather Team will provide frequent updates to this forecast today and Monday.

The storm threat will wind down quickly toward dinner-time, followed by much cooler air for Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact, highs on Tuesday may not make it out of the 50s. Temperatures start to rebound on Thursday, with a return to summer-like warmth and humidity by the time Friday and next weekend roll around.
