Man dies trying to help boating accident victims

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WHEC) — A 38-year-old Bloomfield man died while trying to help two victims of a boating accident on Saturday, including an 8-year-old who had to be evacuated by Mercy Flight.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office says that a boating accident took place shortly before 8 p.m. in the Town of Hopewell when 36-year-old Raymond Foster of Canandaigua and an eight-year-old boy crashed their watercraft in a small body of water. Bystander Christopher Barber saw the crash and jumped into the water to assist, but deputies arrived found him unconscious and unresponsive. Despite efforts by first responders, Barber was taken to FF Thompson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The eight-year-old involved in the crash was found conscious and breathing by police but had to be flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment. Foster was also taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.

The Sheriff's Office says that the incident remains under investigation.
