ONTARIO COUNTY (WHEC) — The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public of a scam involving callers pretending to be a sergeant with the sheriff’s office.

Several incidents within the past week have been reported where a caller states that there are pending charges against them for failing to appear for grand jury and contempt of court. The caller then seeks payment of money in order to remove the charges.

Deputies say one victim reported that the caller claimed to be a road patrol sergeant and requested approximately $50,000.

Anyone that has received these types of calls, is urged to call 911 to file a report.

Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that no deputy or member of the sheriff’s office will request payment for any outstanding criminal charge.

At this time, there are no reports of any victims making payment.
