ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - The majority of New Yorkers are looking for stricter gun laws, according to a News10NBC and WNYT poll conducted in advance of next week's state primary.

SURVEYUSA asked 3500 New Yorkers to rank the following on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most important.   Reducing mass shootings averaged 8.8 and protecting gun rights, a 6.2.   When asked should gun laws in general become more or less strict, respondents said:

  • 71% More strict
  • 16% Stay the same
  • 6% Less strict
  • 7% Not sure

New Yorkers were also asked their feelings on specific measures:

  • 57%  Strongly support a ban on assault weapons
  • 55%  Strongly support a ban on high capacity magazines
  • 54%  Strongly support a limit on the number of rounds of ammunition a weapon can hold
  • 68%  Strongly support raising the minimum age to purchase assault weapons from 18-21
  • 78%  Strongly support a background check for all gun purchases, including gun shows and online
  • The survey was conducted prior to Thursday's Supreme Court ruling striking down a state concealed carry law.

On Tuesday, News10NBC released results on the GOP and Democratic primary.

Wednesday, our survey broke down the most important issues according to likely voters.
