Gov. Cuomo signs bill requiring all backseat passengers to wear seatbelts

ALBANY, N.Y. (WHEC) — Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a law requiring all backseat passengers to wear seatbelts in New York State.

Under previous law, only those under 16 needed to buckle up.

In 1984, under Governor Mario Cuomo, New York became the first state to pass a mandatory seat belt law.

The new law takes effect on November 1.
