ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The age of consent for marriage in New York is now 18.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation into law Thursday removing the ability of 17-year-olds to marry with parental and judicial consent.

The change will go into effect 30 days after becoming a law and will apply to licenses issued after that date and marriages that were not solemnized prior to that date.

Before 2017, anyone 14 or older could get married in New York as long as they had parental consent.
