NY Senator backing Baby Food Safety Act

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — There’s a new push to limit levels of toxic heavy metals in baby food on a federal level.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D, NY) says she is backing the Baby Food Safety Act.

It comes following a congressional investigation last fall, which found many top-brand baby foods contain dangerous levels of toxic heavy metals.

The Baby Food Safety Act would limit the amount of lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium in baby food by imposing strict requirements on manufacturers to regularly test and verify their baby foods.

The bill would also require the secretary of Health and Human Services to further lower limits for toxic metals within two years to put regulations in place within three years and to review the regulatory limits every five years.

It was introduced by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D, MN).
