ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The one and only vice presidential debate is in the books and it was far different from the presidential debate a week ago.
Wednesday night's debate was civil for the most part, but Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris wasted little time getting right to it.
Topics cycled through President Donald Trump and Joe Biden's records, the Green New Deal, racial justice and the Supreme Court nomination.
However, it was the pandemic that dominated the early discussion.
"They knew, and they covered it up,” Harris said. “The president said it was a hoax. They minimized the seriousness of it."
"There were millions of supplies or doctors and nurses had the support they needed,” Pence rebutted. “And we began before the month of February to start to develop a vaccine."
News10NBC fact-checked the comments of both vice presidential nominees.
Harris claimed Trump called the coronavirus a hoax, which is misleading. She's referring to a campaign rally in South Carolina back in February in which President Trump said the pandemic is the Democrat's new hoax. The president clarified the next day, saying he was criticizing Democrats for their criticism of his administration's pandemic response. He claimed it was their politicizing of the virus that was the hoax.
Meanwhile, Pence claimed Trump suspended all travel from China when the pandemic hit and that Biden called the decision "xenophobic." But the president's order did not suspend all travel, it only restricted it. Additionally, though Biden was on the fence about the move at first, he never called it "xenophobic.”
While this was the only vice presidential debate, the next presidential debate is still scheduled for Oct. 15 in Miami, Florida.
Trump says he plans to debate that night but Biden has said it shouldn't happen if the president still has COVID-19.
If it’s held, you’ll be able to watch it both online and on-air on News10NBC.
