Good Question: Are there age limits for jury duty?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— Here’s a Good Question about jury duty.

Marcy sent News10NBC’s Brennan Somers this message: Can you tell me if there is an age limit to serve on jury duty and if there isn’t, what are the reasons for that?

That’s a good question, as jury trials do remain on pause across New York due to the pandemic. However, court officials say the need for grand juries is still there, and a limited amount of them are being seated with safety measures in place.

You have to be at least 18 to serve on a jury, New York has no upper age limit.

Somers asked state court officials about it, and they say there’s no exemption from jury service for age. But– if there’s a reason you feel that you can’t serve, whether it’s medical or another hardship, do reach out to your local commissioner of jurors, you can talk about a postponement or getting excused.

Also, if you have a serious condition that could interfere with serving, you can ask for a permanent medical excuse. The commissioner of jurors for your county has the discretion to ask for proof of any request.
